Twitter "Reviews" for the week ended 18th April 2010

24 City (08, Zhang Ke Jia) 82 Acerbic observation of China's ruthless transformation. Unsure regarding mix of interviewees and actors though

Ugetsu monogatari (53,Mizoguchi) 92 Superb ending,a call to (dis)arms for the Japanese people after the delusions of WWII.Qs Status&Artistry

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (07, Dominik) 90 Cinematography immense, the measured storytelling a joy to behold

Wild Strawberries (57, Bergman) 93 Doesn't have any answers but encaspulates the questions of mortality and existence.Well integrated dreams

Revanche (08, Spielmann) 87 Tightly wound, full of foreboding, majestic change of location.Analysis of guilt and desire forgives contrivance

Modern Times (36, Chaplin) 52 Some wonderful ideas and set-pieces but Chaplin the actor leaves me cold. Only the boat sequence got a guffaw.

Flags of Our Fathers (06, Eastwood) 73 Manages to de-mystify and glorify heroism simultaneously. Critique of veteran care. A plodding plot.

Still Life (06, Zhang Ke Jia) 86 Superb use of location and time. Corruption, safety, the effect of large migration and ruthlessness. Brave.

Chinatown (74, Polanski) 95 Great cast, thoroughly engrossing, superb ending. Looks absolutey gorgeous, John Huston convincingly evil.

Twitter "Reviews" for week ending 11th April 2010

The General (26, Bruckman/Keaton) 96 Incredibly fresh, superb set-pieces and fantastic ambition. Funny as fuck too.Keaton amazingly physical

The Family Friend (06, Sorrentino) 76 Bemusing, visually and aurally arresting.Storyline is ambitious but too elliptical hence distant to me

La passion de Jeanne d'Arc (28, Dreyer) 94 Exhilirating quick cuts, close-ups and images of death are as expressive as can be. Faces faces.

The Notorious Bettie Page (05,Harron) 48 Transition between archive & present day didnt mesh,one-paced,left with what was the point? feeling

Double Take (09, Grimonprez) 47 Singular but ultimately all 4 strands become conventional. May just be me misunderstanding the link though.

La grande illusion (37,Renoir) 99 Radical treatise on class due to lack of stridency, mines deep emotions without sentimentality.Marseillaise

Partie de campagne (36, Renoir) 93 How to be a playa in 1860 followed by most touching scene of longing and regret I've seen. Renoir rules.

Repast (Meshi) (51, Naruse) 81 Loachian chronicle of post-war Osaka and Tokyo focusing on gender relationship.Setsuko Hara impressive again

The Night of the Hunter (55,Laughton) 89 Manifestation of evil speaks in religious tongues.Animals juxtaposition unnerving.Superb atmosphere

City of Men(07,Morelli)43 Glorified favella porn mixed in with sentimental movie of the week stuff. The father's activities struck false note

City Lights (31,Chaplin) 51 The scenes with the flower girl are adorable but I just can't warm to any of the farce, slapstick or physicality

Whip It (09, Barrymore) 60 Ellen Page is the girl I wish I met 10 years ago. Film is warm-hearted run-of-the-mill adolescent rebellion.

Twitter "Reviews" for week ending 4th April 2010

The Princess and The Frog (09, Clements/Musker) 63 Beautifully animated, arresting main character but fakks apart after the transformation

The Blind Side (09, Hancock) 36 Rich smart whitey saves poor black kid. Kid goes from never playing sport to superstar. It's no Rudy.

Aleksandra (07, Sokurov) 76 Most reviews focus on the effects of war but I thought maturity of age was the defining theme.Wish I ustood more

Do The Right Thing (89, Lee) 95 foreshadowing, reverential, radical, capturing of an era, this is a explosive powerful manifesto. Love Hate.

Trucker (08, Mottern) 51 Irritating Boy Syndrome, misery caked on unremittingly but love conquers all. An attack on feminism for me.

Seven Samurai (Shichinin no samurai) (54, Kurosawa) 99 What a brilliant film. Just fucking awesome. It has everything w/out an empty moment.

Spellbound (45, Hitchcock) 75 Too overwrought and melodramatic to be considered great. Dream sequence and big hand/gun memorable though.

Bigger Than Life (56, Ray) 85 Excellent depiction of spiral into manic depression. James Mason impressive and mature treatment of psychosis.

Couscous (La graine et le mulet) (07, Kechiche) 90 Immigrant experience, institutional racism present but scenes around table extraordinary.

L'atalante (34, Vigo) 81 The underwater motif, the quick cuts between the separated lovers, the Venezualan mannequin all fit the beauty of it

Half Moon (06, Ghobadi) 49 Stunning scenery, travails of Kurds dealt with in nice oblique fashion but stultifying spiritualism sucks life out

Lawrence of Arabia (62, Lean) 87 Cinematography and soundtrack are extraordinary. Uneasy about cheerleading of British empire that surrounds

Elite Squad (07, Padilha) 33 Departmental and societal woes well handled, macho and favella fetishisation hateful.Possibly v.good if intended
