Twitter "Reviews" for the week ended 25th April 2010

Apocalypse Now (79, Coppola) 73 Think it was a mistake to watch Redux over original. Uses v/o as crutch, poorly paced. Has quality though.

Les enfants du paradis (45, Carné) 71 Baptiste is a truly wonderful character but the rest of the film has flaws with pacing and tangents.

Man Push Cart (05, Bahrani) 78 Strong use of metaphor, The shots of him dragging the cart were super, reliance on flashback detracts.

The Boss of it All (06, von Trier) 41 Decent concept, terrible execution, gimmicks galore, bored me to tears. All the world ain't a stage.

Telstar (08, Moran) 26 Fascinating man but this film is ropey from start to finish. The handling of turning down The Beatles is terrible.

Sound of the Mountain (54, Naruse) 74 Familiar Japanese family dynamic with more adult and earthy concerns. Not as subtle as it should be.

La strada (54, Fellini) 66 Great for spotting Fellini tropes, naif too naive, strong man too barbaric, Fool is only character of interest.

Distant (02, Ceylan) 92 Lethargy, regret, no carpe diem here. Achingly beautiful landscapes with silence and glances saying more than words.

Koza (s) (95, Ceylan) 62 Wordless, beautiful photography with expressive faces concentrating on the cycle of life and occasional cruelty.

M (31, Lang) 97 Dinner plate, balloon in wires, gut-wrenching.Horrifying, daring, criticism of society, warts and all.Such a range of faces!

Mountain Patrol (04, Chuan Lu) 64 Can see why Nat Geo got involved. The story felt constrained, as if all the analysis was not on the screen

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (62, Ford) 86 Liked the highlighting of how the US loves and cherishes their republic creation narratives

City of Life and Death (09,Chuan Lu) 30 Harrowing but personalisation of both sides did not work.Grave concerns over motive also.Docu better

Ordet (55, Dreyer) 100 Mikkel was my viewpoint and the ending is what it would take for me to have faith.Awesome exploration of human beings

Private Property (06,Lafosse) 79 Tightly scripted drama that winds itself to an almost inevitable conclusion.Very good character development

Andrey Rublyov (66, Tarkovsky) 84 The flashes of artistic inspiration are as good as anything else ever filmed. Need to watch again.

Born and Bred (06, Trapero) 55 The opening is too obvious and none of the scenes felt authentic. Have to admire the supporting cast though.
