Twitter "Reviews" for the week ended 28th March 2010

A Closed Book (10, Ruiz) 42 Conti is solid but film is a mess, score doesn't help. Camera moves straight out of bad horror. Twists add zero.

Shutter Island (10, Scorsese) 90 Visually impressive, highly suspenseful and extremely atmospheric.Tension continuously ratcheted up.

Je veux voir (08, Hadjithomas/Joreige) 51 First talk, then view, finally abstraction. Ultimately unsubstantial - too much filler for 68 mins

Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty (08, Phelan) (s) 61 The granny is a fantastic character, a few laughs and nice story. Good light fun.

/Citizen Kane (41, Welles)/ 86 Camera angles, lighting, structure and ambition all spellbinding, shame the story never quite matches it.

No One Knows about Persian Cats (09, Ghobadi) 52 Films showing real people doing fictional things discombobulate me.Is this the real Tehran?

Lion's Den (Leonera) (08, Trapero) 88 Martina Gusman puts in a superb brave performance. The prison scenes are tight and visceral. Excellent

Storm (09, Schmid) 71 Marinca will end up a big star if there is any justice. Best when detailing politics vs. inner workings of the court.

Extract (09, Judge) 57 Undercurrent of classism in the portrayal of the working man, at times on the knuckle but mostly missing targets.

Nightwatching (07, Greenaway) 84 As beautifully shot as Barry Lyndon. Exposes the folly of thinking of now as modern, wonderful thriller

Afterschool (08, Campos) 94 Askes questions of modern society that are simply not being confronted now. This is deep and tightly thought out

The Box (09, Kelly) 48 The aspects that deal with the notion of free will are too simplistic to be powerful.Could not invest in this one bit

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (09, Oplev) 53 Strong when showing the painstaking research, less so with character portrayal -too broad,b&w

Heading South (05,Cantet) 65 Interesting curio but none of the insight of Human Resources,Time Out or The Class. The How was good, the why ??

The Page Turner (06, Dercourt) 62 Builds Tension effectively but the dialogue and plot are too "on the nose". Weak denouement also hampers

Twitter "Reviews" for the week ended 21st March 2010

Cinderella (50, Geronimi/Jackson) 68 I'm sure I would liked it more as a child, perhaps you should only watch children's classics with kids.

La dama y la muerte (s) (09, Gracia) 38 Good idea ruined by roller-coaster action and machismo buffoonery.

Planet 51 (09, Blanco) 55 Hommage/pilfering from classic movies to please the adults. Central idea is innovative but story is humdrum.

Green Zone (10, Greengrass) 51 Exhilirating until the Magellan reveal, thereafter uses a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Big disappointment

Chicago (02, Marshall) 72 I chose with dread with memories of Nine, this is much better, story, songs and choreography all work.Rioutous fun

Together (He ni zai yi qi) (02, Kaige Chen) 57 Child prodigy manipulated by teacher and ambitious father. Lili role decidely odd.

The Last Days of Disco (98, Stillman) 83 Spoken unspoken thoughts dominate. Ruminations on class, movements and human interactions.Excellent

Sweet Sixteen (02,Loach) 84 The pitch and patois rings true, excellent disparity between normal childhood and lack of opportunity excel.

Chloe (09,Egoyan) 61 Neeson and Moore are fascinating as couple,Orig dealt with prostitute character better, shoulda lost Chloe altogether

Examined Life (08, Taylor) 53 Zizek was the only one to make use of the "walk" effectively, Cornell West entertained but this is more radio.

A Life Less Ordinary (97, Boyle) 21 From Trainspotting to this? McGregor, Hunter and Diaz conspire to make this a torturous 100+ minutes

Appaloosa (08, Harris) 70 A treatise on the corrupt nature of any law. Harris and Viggo impress even if lexicography joke wears itself out.

Brick (06, Johnson) 78 Refreshing, original and striking. Dialogue and mixture of school and film noir stand out. A rather pleasant surprise

After the Wedding (06,Bier) 81 The illusion of control, paternity vs nurture and philanthropy are stylishly examined.Great glimpses of quiet

Bonnie and Clyde (67, Penn) 86 It is the characterisation that makes it noteworthy. The contrast between Bonnie and Blanche is used well.

The Burning Plain (08, Arriaga) 60 Interwines itself into a ball that is unimaginatively unwound. Theron and Lawrence do good work.

The Public Enemy (31,Wellman) 73 Cagney is gangster par excellence. His brutality and immorality are centre stage. Lacks context of the time

Twitter "Reviews" for the week ended 14th March 2010

Out of the Past (47, Tourneur) 70 Cronenberg must have watched this before A History of Violence. Slightly too overwrought to be great.

Exit Through the Gift Shop (10, Banksy) 83 Searing indictment of the commercial art scene that questions the fundamentals of art. Funny too.

Crazy Heart (09, Cooper) 68 Neither the movie or the actors strays too far from it's comfort zone. We get all the redemption but zero pain.

Capitalism: A Love Story (09, Moore) 64 2nd Bill of Rights and Life Insurance segments rise above but the poor stunts and religion detract.

/The Godfather: Part II/ (74, Coppola) 97 Rewatching allows you to concentrate on the details but overall power of the film still there.

Crude (09, Berlinger) 58 Clearly an envirnomental and human disaster but the importance on celebrity and focus on US lawyer hamper.

American Madness (32, Capra) 92 Feels more current than most new releases, the despair of the times at forefront despite Capraesque ending.

Welcome (09, Lioret) 71 French romance meets Border Police Reality TV. The young lead has presence and the movie takes bold steps.Worthwhile

Twitter "Reviews" for the week ended 7th March 2010

The Roaring Twenties (39, Walsh) 81 Almost documentary in parts, romance better made than tough guy. Bogie role very interesting

Rage (09, Potter) 66 Experimental work analysing the media world through faux interviews with all action offstage. Moments of lucidity.

Micmacs (09, Jeunet) 43 Tati-lite, less inventive than Dr. Parnassus. Humour didn't translate, no empathy with Dany Boon at all.

Bringing Up Baby (38, Hawks) 79 Manic, silly and energetic but they were positives. Grant and Hepburn slightly grating 70 yrs on.

Shaun of the Dead (04, Wright) 68 Enjoyable romp, liked the dry humour particularly from Moran. Wondering what all the fuss is about though.

The Lovely Bones (09, Jackson) 18 Just one scene in the film wasn't an irreedemable failure.Film may be better if you are a Jesus freak.

United 93 (06, Greengrass) 80 The docu approach was the correct one, the confusion, horror and heroism of the day are depicted respectfully

Vera Drake (04, Leigh) 86 Cadence and rhythm of dialogue striking. Real story was class and feminism in postwar Britain. Impressive acting.

11' 09" 01 September 11 (02, Various) 58 Veered from sharp insight to self-indulgence. UK, France and Mexico stood out.Chahine was very odd.

Father of My Children (09,Hansen-Love) 78 Family dynamics explored through presence and absence.Best treatment of work-life balance

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (53, Hawks) 71 Jane Russell steals the show for me.Irrepressible glitz, glamour and joie de vivre

A Film With Me In It (08, Fitzgibbon) 59 A slow-burner but the dry humour wins you over in the end. Has fun with the farcical format.

Twitter "Reviews" 18 Feb 10 to 28 Feb 10

Ondine (2009, Jordan) 54 Beautifully shot, cast solid but precocious kid, singposting and need to explain hamper. Too many cliches.

Into The Storm (09, O'Sullivan) 68 Standard biopic but Gleeson is pitch perfect and succeeds in being inspiring without being a hagiography

Farewell (09, Carion) 76 Tense thriller changes point of view and uses unusual camera angles. The sum up is too tidy though.

Enter the Void (09, Noé) 93 The strangest most sensory experience I've had in the cinema.Spellbinding wonderful,Noé is Ophuls on acid

Life During Wartime (09, Solondz) 83 Stylised, grotesque and the most twisted humour you'll see in the movies. A worthy sequel

Tides (Begums) (10, Zviedris) 10 Worthy subject, terrible execution. How can 70 minutes be packed with filler? Zero insight

Bye Bye Now (s) (09, O'Sullivan/Whitaker) 68 Amusing and poignant,a lament to the demise of phoneboxes and the death of a way of life

The Island (Ostrov) (06, Lungin) 59 Methodical approach with striking symbolism. Questionable conclusions and viewpoint detract.

Samson and Delilah (09, Thornton) 52 Misery piled on unrealistically with redemptive cop-out.2 lovely scenes tho (dancing & bathing)

Accident (09, Cheang) 71 Surveillance aspects excellent, set-pieces spectacular but the story was muddled with disappointing climax

Touki Bouki (73, Mambety) 73 Highly expressive almost surreal approach. Soundtrack kept things interesting. Loved the parade scene

Women Without Men (09, Neshat/Azari) 49 Occasional beautiful shots did not make up for the poor narrative. Iran has produced better

Breathless (09, Yang) 3/100 2 people walked out after 5 mins. They did the right thing. Repugnant film, why did people clap?

Please Give (10, Holofcener) 56 Nice acting, nice setting, nice story. No faults to it and no real positives either, just inoffensive

Same Same But Different (09,Buck) 22 If satire then it was very good, if played for real then it was awful. I lean towards the latter

Lourdes (09,Hausner) 87 Ambitous formal exploration. Took an easy target and thoughtfully examined. Testud and cast immense

A Brand New Life (09, Lecomte) 73 Very similar to Treeless Mountain though slightly inferior. Deeper meaning of just what family is.

She, a Chinese (09, Guo) 75 Manages not to turn into melodrama despite the build up of exploitation as she moves from village to city

What You Don't See (09, Fischer) 58 Clever, though one-paced, psychological thriller crossed with Funny Games. Ending inconsistent

Eyes Without A Face (60, Franju) 68 More a thriller than a horror for me.Concept is horrifying but Special FX have dated badly.

Lebanon (09, Maoz) 88 Visceral film that gets into your guts. Soldiers are too sympathetic but brings something new to the war genre

Lemon Tree (08, Riklis) 52 Facile "Why Can't We Just Get Along"? type movie. Every character is a caricature with plodding plot.

La Danse (09,Wiseman) 96 Incredible exhibition of the ballet. The art, rehearsal, audience, business and mundanity all covered.Terrific

I Am Love (09, Guadagnino) 92 Swinton is a force of nature, brilliantly shot, subtle when needed, not afraid to be overblown, ambitious
